Business and Market Discussion

Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, Paul Chan, is expected to unveil a green budget later this morning and announce measures to develop a green ecosystem in Hong Kong, which he believes is key to the city’s economic recovery. Mr. Chan is expected to put aside a few hundred million dollars to upgrade facilities in the city’s country parks and invest in sustainable infrastructure.

It’s also believed that HK$10 billion will be set aside for a new loan scheme for the unemployed and freelancers who have lost their jobs. Five-year loans capped at HK$80,000, with an annual interest rate of 1% will be offered to around 250,000 unemployed workers.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has relieved some of the concerns about higher interest rates and inflation in the US. Testifying before the Senate Banking Committee, he said that inflation is still “soft” and the economic outlook is still “highly uncertain.”

On today’s Money Talk we’re joined by Stewart Aldcroft of CitiTrust, Tariq Dennison from GFM Asset Management and RTHK’s International Economics Correspondent, Barry Wood.
