China overtook the US as the world’s top destination for new foreign direct investment last year. New investments by overseas businesses into the US fell 49% in 2020 whilst China saw foreign direct investment jump 4%, helping it overtake the US, which for decades held the No. 1 spot.

IHS Markit’s composite survey of business activity in the US, which includes the manufacturing and the services sectors, hit 58 in January, an increase on the previous month’s figure of 55.3. A reading above 50 indicates activity is growing.

In the Eurozone, the slump in activity deepened in January. IHS Markit’s flash eurozone composite PMI was 47.5, narrowly below forecasts and down from 49.1 in December. The first reading of the output index for Germany dropped to a seven-month low and in France, the composite index moved deeper into contraction territory.

On today’s Money Talk, we’re joined by Alex Wong of Ample Capital and Nick Marro from the Economist Intelligence Unit. With a view from mainland China is Shanghai-based independent economist Andy Xie.
