‘China fills void as Trump adopts isolationist stance’

2025-02-11
The withdrawal by the United States from the world stage under the second Trump presidency could very well mean greater Chinese prominence in global affairs.

Under its America First policies, the US has imposed higher tariffs on goods from China, moved to cut foreign aid, and walked away from various world bodies and agreements, such as the World Health Organisation, the Paris climate-change accord and the International Criminal Court.

All this means China could fill the void and take up a stronger role in global events, for example brokering peace in some of the world's trouble spots and offering assistance to countries in need.

Josef Gregory Mahoney, a professor of politics and international relations at East China Normal University in Shanghai, said more nations are now seeing Beijing as a more reliable partner, and it's an opportunity for the country to become the "gold standard".
