The Hong Kong international Literary Festival ran from October 5th – 14th. It included more than 60 events presented by over 30 overseas writers and an equal number of local participants. Among the highlights, from two very different backgrounds, were Irish author Colm Toibin, and mainland Chinese writer Wang Xiaofang, known for his novels that are highly critical of corruption and politics in China's civil service. The Works spoke to both of them.

Norwegian artist Matias Faldbakken likes to use in his work mass-produced and functional objects that have been drawn on, vandalised, scarred, and crunched up. At the Simon Lee gallery until 17th November his one-man and one-piece exhibition “Maintenance” focuses on a large locker that he has modified into a piece of art.

While Matias Faldbakken distorts objects in his show, in the exhibition “Photoshop V 1 & 2”, Indian artist Nandan Ghiya paints over and transforms old studio portrait photographs, pixielating faces and distorting the photo frame.

And we’re ending this week with jazz. Singer Maria Kvist grew up in a small village in Sweden. Music played a big part in her family, and even as a child she began to sing and perform with her accordion player father. One day, her teacher introduced her to the music of Oscar Peterson and Gershwin, and she discovered jazz. In this week's show, Maria performs a song from her new album in our studio.
